Look, I like software updates, and I’m not alone-some of us enjoy seeing what new features developers have cooked up. But even though they’re less exciting, I’m an even bigger fan of security updates…and Apple is introducing a new type of security update for iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
On Monday, Apple released its first batch of Rapid Security Response (RSR) patches, iOS 16.4.1 (a), iPadOS 16.4.1 (a), and macOS 13.3.1 (a), for iPhone and iPad, and macOS devices, respectively. RSR is a new type of software patch delivered between Apple’s regular, scheduled software updates.
Apple announced the new « Rapid Security Response » updates for iPhones, iPads, and Macs last year at WWDC, and today, the first publicly released patch on the system started to roll out. After rough going initially when the new update claimed every iPhone was « offline, » the new patch is now installed on our devices without a problem.
On June 2022, Apple announced that the Rapid Security Response feature would be available starting with iOS 16.4.1, iPadOS 16.4.1, and macOS 13.3.1 operating systems. Once a Rapid Security Response has been installed, a letter will appear after the software version (i.e. iOS 16.4.1 will become iOS 16.4.1 (a)).
Apple promised faster turnaround times for security patches with iOS 16 and macOS Ventura, and it’s now delivering on that claim. The company has released its first Rapid Security Response updates for devices running iOS 16.4.1, iPadOS 16.4.1 and macOS 13.3.1. They’re available through Software Update as usual, but are small downloads that don’t require much time to install.
